#MondayMotivation Familiar is Safe but is it Life Changing?

Today I took a step out of my comfort zone.
Right now it feels exhilarating but we all know that things outside our comfort zone can be scary.
When it is scary, you can either continue, or run back to what is familiar.
That space where things you do are routine feels good because you don't risk anything and are probably happy. Or think you're happy.

The danger with staying in that zone though is you may never truly reach your full potential, nor be as productive as you could be. If you do it once, you can then do it again because it gives you confidence and helps you be more creative.

What can you do to get out of it?
- Do! Do! Do!
My instinct is to think a lot but there are so many times that I have analysed myself to inaction.
Thinking is good as it helps you weigh pros and cons but do learn to also ACT.

- Do Something New
You can learn a new skill or brush up on skills you already have, like learning to play the piano or to speak Spanish, make a new friend, get a new hair style or buy some clothes different from your main style.
You can also go to a new place, city or country.

- Don't expect it to be Easy
Nothing that involves breaking or varying a routine is ever easy. Even where the first step like in my case today is easy, there will be something else that comes from that step that will still scare you.
Understand it and don't be afraid of it.

I hope these few tips help.
Can you s.h.a.r.e any with me?

Let's keep chatting on Instagram and Twitter

#MondayMotivation How to UNLearn

If I asked what you learnt recently, you would probably have a million responses.

What if I switched it up and asked what you UNlearnt recently?
There you may hesitate and look at me like I was mad.

I do believe though that life is about
- Learning
- Unlearning, and
- Relearning.

Let me explain.

The average person will learn something new everyday, either while on our daily commute, while watching or reading the news, or from something online.
I recently learnt that President Macron of France will be visiting Ghana, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast while covering the news for Kwesefied. (I then wondered, 'what happened to Naija na?!')

French President, Emmanuel Macron

But i digress.
Learning is easy, especially if we open ourselves to it.

ReLearning is also easy. There are things we have learnt before that we either take for granted or do not use and so must relearn them. I for example, had to relearn how to move my arm after I fractured it and wore a cast for weeks. The first day the cast was taken off, the doctor and nurse said, "Move your arm" and I thought I was doing it but guess what? My arm was NOT moving.
I then had to undergo a series of physiotherapy sessions to RElearn how to move my arm.
That was not fun I can tell you.

What may be fun or not fun depending on our attitude to it is UNlearning.
Imagine you grow up thinking something and 'knowing it for sure', then growing up and finding out you were wrong!
There are people who still argue the earth is flat while most say it is round.

If you do not open yourself up to letting go of wrong or false information you have, you may find yourself stuck in the mud and not growing. Learning, Unlearning and Relearning are all essential aspects of growth.

Can you s.h.a.r.e one thing you recently Learnt, Unlearnt or Relearnt, with me?

#MondayMotivation Even if NEPA takes light, a Fridge should not become your Wardrobe

There is a common joke in Nigeria about how when the power situation gets so bad, the fridges and freezers lose their initial use and get turned into wardrobes. That is what I thought of the second I stumbled upon this quote by Benjamin Franklin for my Instagram Quote of the Day "Hide not your talents, they for use were made; what's a sundial in the shade?"

Of course Benjamin Franklin is old and not an African so we probably do not use nor know much about sundials but we still understand it for what he means- things (and talents) should be used as they were intended and not buried away.

What are the top 3 things that keep us from letting our light shine?
From what I know, it usually has to do with Fear (of failure or rejection), Laziness (and its cousin, Procrastination), and Lack of Confidence (How dare I do something this big).

If you are troubled by one or all of the above, then think about this
- It does not matter how old, big or strong you get, fear rears its head. What you must do is let fear drive and not stop you. As Omilola Oshikoya says, do it AFRAID!

- There are simple tips and tricks that can help get your laziness and procrastination under control if that is your handicap. Once you acknowledge your flaws, you can then work around them. Do not let a negative flaw you have hold you back ever.

- What can we achieve by refusing to dream big or aim high? As they say, dreams are free so why not just dream big?

I hope this helps you? Just remember that you have your talent for a reason. Let your light shine. I cannot say this enough.
What is one thing you can do this week to showcase your talent? Leave a comment below!

#MondayMotivation Pressure will take you from Coal to Diamond... Welcome It

My #MondayMotivation quote is by Henry Kissinger- "A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure".

I like it because it is one of those posts you see all the time so that it is when it comes true that you know how true it is. I know, I used 'true' twice.

Until the test comes, we stay doing, thinking and saying the same thing, and that is why, no matter how uncomfortable change may be, it is welcome.

I have a friend who like many of us, thrives on deadlines. She won't study, work or do her stuff till the very last hour or week and she once told me that anytime she finishes her work before a deadline, it feels like the work isn't as good.

Is that ideal? Probably not. It is an example though of how we need something major to squeeze the best out of us and actually show just how much we can take. Like with working out?
People will tell you that every time you build your tolerance to a point where say, a 30 second plank, no longer stresses you, then you increase it.

Is pressure fun? No.
Next time you are faced with pressure though, whenever you can, smile... It is just making sure you come through like Rihanna sang- 'shining bright like a diamond'.

#MondayMotivation But where is the action?

"Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit." Conrad Hilton.

I remember when i was younger and wanted to be taller.
Somehow, society convinces us that being short is something we should be ashamed of or want to change. Why? Short, Tall, Medium... who cares?

That is not what this post is about though. I was short and an uncle once told me- if you want to get taller, eat more beans, but not just any kind of beans. Eat the beans with weevils.

So i did. Diligently. I asked for beans and more beans. Did i get taller? Check my Instagram then answer that question yourself. Lol.

What i do know though is i made an effort.

Imagine if all i did was wake up, eat, think and sleep WISHING i was taller?

We have dreams, dreams of things we want to see come true but the only way to see some kind of reaction, is to actually have action.

Sitting down and really really really wanting it, no matter how cute or sweet, will oftentimes not get us anywhere closer to our wishes.

Getting to a destination requires actually putting one foot in front of the other as we walk, or driving in a car, or flying or... you get my point.

#MondayMotivation Maybe what matters is what you say about yourself, not what they say about you.

I do not know why but this sentence, 'Just because they play the music does not mean you have to dance to it' keeps presenting itself to me.
Or maybe i do know why.

It is easy to get caught up sometimes in what has been said or will be said about you. If i do abc, they will say xyz, or, they say i am uvw... It is a lot of ' they said ' and 'they will say' which my friends, can be crippling for you.

It is possible that some of the things people say about us are, maybe slightly exaggerated but true all the same. They may be right that you are lazy or a quitter, not the funniest nor the most put together. It does not however make it all true, nor less deserving of success.

People may question you, laugh at you or brand you a failure but the truth is, until you yourself say these things, then you are not losing.

While taking advice and striving for perfection is a good thing, do not let what people say become true by giving it life yourself.

Once again remember, maybe what matters is not what people say about you, but what you say about yourself. What are you saying?

#MondayMotivation Protect your happy

I know if i wanted to really be grammatically correct, i would have said, 'protect your happiness' but i am using a bit of poetic license so please bear with me.

When people die, they do not take anything with them (that we know of).
They leave their possessions, their ideas, the unfulfilled dreams and the happy memories.
If we truly die alone and have to deal with consequences of things we did and did not do, how come we leave ourselves so vulnerable to others?

Make a decision that your happiness is important, and understand that this does not mean you will never be sad, nor that you will always get what you want, but what it does mean is
- You do not look to others for your joy.
Stop letting partners, colleagues, friends or strangers affect you so much and do not depend on them to make you happy.
- You stand by the stance you take
Be it your choice of what to do, where to go, who to date or views to hold, please be sure that you base this on how you truly feel or what you want, not the dictates of man.

Protect your happy. Guard your heart. Noone has the right to make you sad. Do not give them the satisfaction of seeing you down!

#MondayMotivation "Maybe the problem is your phone"

Yesterday i was at an event and asked my friends to help take pictures of me. First friend tried, i did not like the picture. Then the second friend, and then the third. Still, no picture seemed good enough. Whether it was the light or that it came out blurry, something was always off. Another friend then said, "Well then maybe the issue is with your phone then not the people taking the pictures!"

How true is this for life?
We blame our parents, our country, our family, the government, the noisy neighbours, the lecturer in school, everyone but ourselves, when things go wrong. Sadly, till we do accept the part we played in the way things are for us, we may never heal or move on.

You cannot change everything around you- the light, the focus, or time- but you can change how you see things, and what you do. Before blaming everything and everyone else in sight, fix your own thinking or issues and then look at the problems again. You may find the picture becomes clearer.

#MondayMotivation As with finger-nails, so with life

Ever taken a look at my nails?

On a good day, i have a manicure and a pop of colour. On an okay day, my nails are natural. And on my worst days (nervous, busy etc), you can see that while i do not chew my nails, i still take a lot out on them.

I have had my great days where i let my nails grow, paint them and love them. Growing my nails takes a few weeks. For me, it is the most boring couple of weeks as i track the growth and paint, clean, re-paint. But then give me one stressful or very bored day and i cut them all off!
This happened this month.

I made a vow to leave my nails alone. Everytime i absentmindedly started playing with them, i would stop myself and focus on something else. I lasted a few weeks. Then one fine day, i sat down and played with them. Again.

And you see, my nails remind me of a lot of things. Like building things up and taking them down. Like how it is much easier to destroy than to build up.

Think about it. It took me WEEKS to get my nails to a passable level. It took MINUTES to cut them off. Or like my hair. I have been growing my hair now for about seven years. I am sure if i go to a salon now, it would take about thirty minutes maximum to shave it off!

I wonder why negative things cost us less (in the short run), and good things take longer and feel more tedious. But i am also mindful of how it may feel like it is easier to just be bad, but in the long run, series of negative thoughts, patterns and behaviour will hurt us.

From my nails i learn two things
- It is so much harder to build (a business, reputation, a person) than it is to destroy it. All that we do can be lost with one careless word, thought or action. We have to be careful!

- Easier does not always translate to better. Yes, growing my nails is a big deal and stressful for me but it carries so many more benefits than the easy 'attack-nails-when-stressed' behaviour.

- Build habits early!
I wish i had learnt to stop attacking my nails while i was a lot younger. By now, i won't even be going back and forth on it. Habits can be annoying to form and bad habits are always easier to form and harder to kick, but habits learnt when young will benefit us for much longer and will become a seamless part of us as we grow older.

#MondayMotivation Bonang on Staying Focused and Getting what you Want

For today's Monday Motivation, i wanted to s.h.a.r.e something Bonang Matheba, radio and television personality, plus amazing business woman, s.h.a.r.ed with me when she came to Nigeria to co host 'The Future Awards' with Darey.

We were at BLD in Lekki so it was more of a laid back drinks night out with a couple of other media personalities like Ariyike, Toke and Latasha Ngwube but we still had time for a quick chat!

There are several sides to Bonang and i was interested in Bonang the successful mediaprenuer. For me, i wanted to know her tips for staying focused and getting what you want in life, what is in store for her in the future, and of course, you do not sit with Bonang and not get her must-do beauty essentials!

On How To Stay Focused and Get What You Want
Bonang keeps it simple with these three tips
Don't listen to other people and their negativity. Listen to yourself
Unlock your mind. It helps you to free yourself
Get over what people think about you.

On What Is Next For Her
Bonang is really passionate about conquering the international stage and having a family of her own.

On Her Top Three Beauty Essentials
"Foundation, Lashes long and gorgeous and Black liquid liner"

Her message for her fans in Lagos and indeed, Nigeria
"Thank you. The love has been incredibly overwhelming. Lagos is my favourite city on the continent"

#MondayMotivation There came a king which knew not Joseph

The story of Joseph in the Bible is a well known story.

A boy, hated by his brothers, is eventually sold into slavery and then thrown into jail. But he grows up to become Pharoah's trusted servant.

Joseph's story in itself is full of lessons but if you read a little further, you get to the part of the Bible where it says, "Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph".
So picture this. This great man had saved a nation and his family from starvation and was the stuff of legends for a while. But eventually, like it or not, there came a king which knew not Joseph.
This teaches me a few things.

Tell your story
While the name 'Joseph' would have been well known for a generation or two, after a while, it seemed to have faded from main history.
Imagine if we didn't have the story of David and Goliath in the Bible? Imagine if noone ever wrote about the Titanic? Imagine if there was no Elvis museum?
What this tells me is it is not enough to do great things, you must also tell these stories...

Again and Again
Don't just tell it once- tell it again. Say it on radio, say it on television, put it in a book. I am not talking about you yourself getting on these platforms (but if you can why not), I am talking about having a pr and branding strategy that works.
Sometimes your work will speak for itself for years (I mean, see Thor!) but other times, you have to ensure people don't forget you and what you do!

Don't rely on past glory
Aaargh!
This is a big DON'T!
Ever met someone who is only about "I did this" and "I did that" and YES, the things you DID are great for bragging rights (like you know if you DID come up with Facebook or the tag line, "Just Do It") but the danger is resting on that.
What you did is only relevant to us if it relates to what you are DOing as well.
Your past is great and we all pray for an awesome future but our present is exactly that. Present.

Relax
Guess what? No matter how good or unique you are, there'll always be someone else who does what you do. Thought of a great business idea? Awesome. But o look, so have ten other people.
The point is, there will always be space for you, and always someone out there who does not know you.
So what should you do?

Conquer new territories
One thing that amuses me about radio is- there's a new listener every day. Every week I get at least three people who tuned in to my show for the first time, or who are meeting me for the first time.
I see every one who does not know me as a chance to get them to know me. It's like new markets, it's a chance to get them to know you and that way, you channel new things to your show / business.
Imagine this- your favourite cola brand has to remind old customers why they drink x cola, but they have to tell younger ones why they should drink x cola!

You can think of it as scary, but I choose to see it as exciting.

There's a whole new world out there for us to conquer.

Remember, for every new king that knew not (insert your name / brand / business), it's an opportunity to get them to not only know you, but to win them over to your corner!

Go out there and be awesome

#MondayMotivation Work Work Work Work Why?

(Do not read this post without Rihanna's 'Work' mentally nearby).

So I know this is the generation of 'hustiling'. Everyone is working hard, main job and side hustle or running their own business, people glorying in not sleeping and we generally just running ourselves down!

Look, I applied for my first job in secondary school so believe me when I say, working is part survival and part fulfilling something on the inside. We work because we have to, because we want to, and a lot of times, we work because we can.

BUT!
On the flip side is the damage we may be doing to ourselves. Stress, high blood pressure etc, and that silent voice that speaks up when we are 'chilling' to say "so you are now relaxing ba? You better go and work? I'm sure so and so isn't resting at the moment".
So we work some more.

I believe in working hard but working smart. I try to make every decision targeted and specific.

It's awesome to (in Rihanna's voice everybody) work work work work work. It is also awesome to know the four w's of work.

What
What is this for? Is it a step in the right direction purpose wise? What does it bring me? Salary? Contentment? Expression?

You need to the 'what' of what you do!

Who
Who am I doing this for? Who am I going to be if I do this? Who benefits from this? Who is really calling the shots?

Where
Where is this taking me to? Where will I get to if I get on the path?

And for perhaps the most important reason of all-

Why
Why am I doing this? Is it for ME or to satisfy someone or something?

Be sure that when you say yes to an 'opportunity' or an offer, whether made by someone or from within you, you can actually answer these questions.

#MondayMotivation This is YOUR life; are you who YOU want to be?

This post is about those who have balls, and those who don't.

Working on radio exposes me to all kinds of music- the good, the bad and the 'why na?'. Sometimes a big artiste releases a new song and they are taken to the cleaners and I'm like, o wow.

But to be honest, fighting for your dreams takes accepting criticism and ugliness. Question is, can you fight for your dreams the way artistes (even those we criticise the harshest) calmly release their song, overlook the hate and keep going on?

Sometimes we even knock ourselves down (and out) before others do, by thinking of what people would or would not say.

They want to model but on twitter there are so many jokes about how everyone is a model these days, so they never work on their portfolio.

They are good writers but instead of opening a blog, they listen to people laugh at bloggers and how suddenly everyone owns a blog. (re: blogs. It is okay for EVERYONE to own a blog. That is what a blog is all about. It is like an online diary. I don't get why all the fuss.)

My point is, sometimes we spend so much time knocking ourselves down that there is no need for anyone else to do it for us.

And for me, i pray i can truly say, this is my life, this is who i want to be.

Not some times, but ALL the time.

#MondayMotivation How to get on with it! Plus, a Dj Spinall tip

Let's be honest! Some days, you can't do it.
Or at least you think you can't.

You can't go to work
You can't go to school
You can't face people
You can't smile.

That's a lot of can'ts.

And here's one more- you can't do that.

In an ideal world, we would "take all the time you need" but as grown ups, we have to get up and go, no matter what we are dealing with and each one of us has something we do to get things going.

I chatted with Dj Spinall on my show this morning and he told me he has a go to song that he plays when he is feeling down but still has to dj at an event. I have that too. Just a set of songs that pump me up.
And that's my first tip for you-

* Have a Go-To
It could be a go to song, Bible verse or poem that leaves you pumped!

* Psych yourself
I am not averse to throwing punches like Ali when I'm in the studio feeling down. I start dancing and psyching myself up. Err, just remember to do this away from people lest they call a doctor..

* Separate the two
They say women are able to compartmentalise better. I say, we all need to learn to separate. Don't bring those emotions from personal life to the workplace, and especially not with colleagues, bosses or clients. I can't be on air crying, dj Spinall can't start playing "my heart will go on" at a wedding just cos he's heartbroken.
Lol.
Separate it!
Practise and it makes perfect.

* Deal with it
I don't want to end this post on a defeatist or 'avoidance' note.
It's important to deal with whatever it is getting you down. If it's something that can be solved, solve it. Whatever it is, deal with it.
So, how do YOU cope?

#MondayMotivation You can't get it back

I remember one time when I lost my hundred naira. My dad saw me looking distraught and said okay o, here's another hundred.

I was grateful, but I still kept crying.

Why?
Well my theory was, if I had not lost that initial hundred, now I would have two hundred, not hundred.
Uhn?

It made sense to me at the time and upset me. Until I figured, even if my dad gave me another hundred to make it two, then I would only think about how it could have been three.. And on and on. So, hey, Tosyn, free it!
You can't get it back.

I remember this every time I lose something. I ask, "will you rather keep regretting things you can't have or do you want to move on and enjoy what you do have?". Usually it works and I do move on.

Regret is a dangerous street. It brings up the past and offers you pain with no healing. You can't let it suck you in, keep moving till you turn off.

Think of things you've lost- money, jobs, love, whatever. Is thinking about it now bringing it back? Exactly. So keep moving!!!

I hope this helps, and please s.h.a.r.e with me- what is one thing you wish you could get back?

#MondayMotivation It is not them, It is you

Hands up if you have ever been broken up with with the infamous line, "It is not you it is me"?

Yes, that line that attempts to make you feel better but just makes you feel like crap. They are right though. If you are in a good relationship with someone who just can't make it work, it really is not you, it is them. Sometimes, like that movie title, they are just not that into you.

The other version of a break up is when the person is done with the relationship but cannot bring themselves to end it so they stop calling you, and when you do call they do not stay on the phone for longer than neccessary. They won't ever invite you to anything nor acknowledge you and when you finally cannot take it any longer, you break up with them. (The really good actors by the way end up acting hurt and you become the bad guy).

Sometimes in life, we become that person. We are tired of a relationship, we hate our job or we don't want to be friends with a person again but instead of moving on properly, we just become difficult till they force an end.

Before you get to that point where you are getting to work late, not speaking with your colleagues and doing just what is expected of you but not more, check yourself. The reverse is also the case. "It is not me, is it them". I am not the one who has an issue, they are the ones who are *insert excuse or complaint you make here*.
And so because of that, instead of us to move on or get the things we want, we make excuses instead and stay stuck.

Ever employed someone that was just not good for the job? They had a great personality, they were friendly, they maybe even got you but you knew capacity wise, they did not have it. Somehow you continue hanging on making excuses like, "maybe they did not understand the brief", etc etc.
If you keep making excuses and nothing improves, then it is not them it is you.

I just think think that at some point in our lives, we have to accept that we need to make a change and if we do not, then we have noone else to blame but ourselves. If you are in a bad friendship for example where your friend uses you over and over again and you know something is wrong but do nothing about it, then guess what? It is no longer them, it is now you. That friend has no reason to 'let you go'. You have to make that move yourself.

Truth is we do not always get the chance to walk off into the sunset declaring we want our freedom and getting everything we want in life exactly as we want it. BUT! As much as you can, you have to fix things and accept that if you are in a crappy situation that you could have got out of, then it is not them... it is YOU

#MondayMotivation Learning to beat Procrastination

Hi all.
It is another Monday and while i had something else to feature on Monday Motivation before, i stumbled on a tweet that made me change direction.

Basically someone on twitter was asking for tips on how to deal with procrastination. Oddly enough, one of the articles that popped up while i was checking news stories this morning was one on one thing ALL billionaires don't do. According to the writer, after talking to a number of billionaires, he found out that they DON't procrastinate.

So there we go.

While making billions is not the only thing there is to strive for, there is no doubt that whether you want success in personal life, financial freedom or success in your career, you have to conquer the vice of procrastination. A vice i am well acquainted with and while i have not fully conquered my tendency to procrastinate, i have found out how to deal with it.

1. Find out why you procrastinate.
We procrastinate because we are easily distracted, afraid, a little lazy or just prefer to take the scenic route for everything. Next time you put doing something off, find out why. Tackling the root cause will help you.

2. Create reminders
Set reminders for practical times and then when it comes up on your phone, DO IT!
Say for example, you have set 'call mechanic' for 2pm and it goes off, DO IT, even if you are eating. If you snooze or reschedule, you may never get to it!

3. Let Proverbs be a guide.
Things like, "a little sleep, a little slumber, so shall poverty come upon you" are like that cane parents held... anti-foolishness reminder.

4. Be practical.
Sometimes we really do try to do too much. If you fill your day with too many tasks, it is like filling your plate with too much food at a buffet- nothing gets fully enjoyed. Be wise!

These four tips help me be better at doing things when i am supposed to. I hope it helps you too.

#TBDaily x Bonang Matheba... On Staying focused and getting what you want!

#TBDaily x #MondayMotivation A Day is a Day is a Day

Growing up, Mondays felt sacred. I watched people treat Monday like a mystical day. You had to 'price' the goods in the market properly, not fight with your neighbours and not give bad or stressful information because 'o saro Monday" (it was early Monday morning).
Okay.

For me, i hated Sunday evenings because they brought the week, not just Monday, but every single day i would have to wake up early, then go to school and get some homework for the next day. Till today, Sunday evenings can be scary for me.

Between university and NYSC, when i could truly let my inner gypsy shine because lectures / classes could be at anytime so Mondays were no longer as special, i fell back to loving each day for what it brought.

It was refreshing to not have Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays etc, but have 'Family Law', 'Js 3' etc. For holidays, days became blurry and Monday (and to a lesser extent, Sunday), lost its scare.

For those of us in the creative industry, or who run companies outside a 9 to 5, the same effect is there. Like i tell people, i work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays... any day that ends with day.

The best way to tackle these things really is to not attach any special or mystic importance to any day in particular. That is not to say you shouldn't chart your energy levels and know your best days, but when we have all these 'moandays' jokes et al, it just gives 24 hours power. The kind of power we give 'New Year', but without the positive side effects like resolutions.

So this little message is to say, it is all psychological. And if you conquer Monday, you can conquer the week, But remember, after all is said and done, each day is the same twenty four hours. Don't let one day ruin your week. Nor life.

Tuesday

#TBDaily x #MondayMotivation Am i?

It does not matter what you do, one day you will wake up and say (pardon my French), "fukc it, I'm going back to bed".
We all struggle and search for relevance. And get sad or unfufilled when we don't think we are being so.
Someone sent me a message (see image) and I just had to save it! Not because I feel this way now, but I may. One day. And I'd need it to read, right?

If you are feeling in a rut and maybe a little irrelevant today, understand that everyone and everything matters. Find the reason for the job and the bigger picture and you'll be relevant.
One thing to do when that 'what am I doing here' question comes up in relation to work is to ask yourself, "Does my work..."
- help people?
- make people smile?
- make people look beautiful?
- help people feel beautiful?
- solve a problem?
- give people dignity?
- help me, my family, my nation, my friends?
